Living Knowledge: Building Partnerships for Public Access to Research,

January 25-27, 2000, Leuven, Belgium

The conference seeks to explore the possiblity and benefits of establishing an international network of science shops and community research centers.

Science shops provide independent, participatory research support in response to concerns experienced by civil society. The term "science" is used in its broadest sense, incorporating social and human sciences, as well as natural, physical, engineering and technological sciences.

Many existing science shops are linked to or based in universities, where students conduct research under the supervision of science shop or other university staff. However, many initiatives not linked to universities - such as community based research centers - are similar to science shops and do the same type of work. Despite the different names and differences in operation and organization, basic principles and goals are the same: create access to science, knowledge and technology for civil society organizations, particularly those groups that otherwise would not or could not ordinarily access such resources.

The SCIPAS (Study and Conference for Improving Public Access to Science) project, funded under the 5th Framework Program of the European Community for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities, includes representatives from Denmark, Northern Ireland, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Israel, Romania, South Africa, and the United States, with informal representation from Canada and England. The SCIPAS project is studying the trends, operations, and developments within community-based research and community research centers/science shops around the world. Initial research results will be presented at the conference.
